The Yesteryear Range of Models

All models were issued a 'Y' number. As the die cast moulds wore out so another new model was issued under the same number to take it's place, thus giving rise to, in some cases, four or five different models under the same number - confused - just follow the chart and you won't be. Models were coded as Y1-1, Y1-2, Y1-3 and so on for each number in the range. Because of this models were bought into the range on different dates and not as a full series in one go. To go one step further, under each model is a variation number and so we get for instance Y1-1 -1, Y1-1-2 etc etc depending on how many variants are known on a particular model.

What is a variation - it could be any number or combination of changes to a model such as colour, wheel types, casting changes etc but all are itemised.

The true first series are only considered to be numbers Y 1-1 to Y16-1 with Y15 and 16 being a larger scale than the first 14 issues and the range stayed at this total of Y numbers from 1956 until 1975 when the number Y17 was used for the very first time and extended beyond the magic number 16. Numbers Y48 to Y60 have never been used for some reason. There was never any explanation as to why, just one of those strange things that happen in the diecast world but obviously there was still plenty of Y numbers to go round without resorting to the new coding version (see below Y66)

This was as far as the single designation 'Y' number went. After this they were called 'Collectibles' There may be a reissue in 2006 to celebrate the 50th. Anniversary of Yesteryears (1956 - 2006) with at least one new casting promised.

NEW 2006 YESTERYEAR MODELS ISSUED

Not sure why the extra large new box design issued. I do think it is rather attractive and spent ages trying to work out how to open the lower half of the box as I thought maybe an individual model box was contained in there. There is no box and it does not open so you have to store all this! There is an outer plastic sleeve, which when removed allows the model to slide out of the box on it's plastic baseplate. Personally for me, the bottom half of the box with the superb graphics on would have done and end flaps that opened. Easier to store and less space and as noted, no new casting just a rehash of old models. Due to the fact these are just rehashed colours of very old castings by Mattel and are bound to be very poor sellers this may well be the end of the line for this great range but who knows. It would be a shame to see them end like this but as the almighty dollar rules the roost then I can forsee no more issues under the MOY banner till it time for the name to become vacant under business law and they reissue one or two to hold onto the name legally - very similar to how Matchbox managed to acquire the Dinky name !
